My Creative Space...

This week I decided I needed to make a few thank you gifts for the parent's that worked extra hard on our school fundraiser this past weekend - thank you's are so important!

I remembered some cute day of the week clothespeg magnets I had seen  here and decided I would try to make my own. So far I have covered one side of my pegs with scrapbooking paper. I am till working on the days of the week part:)

My Creative Space

The first part of the week I was frantically trying to finish my hottie for the Hottie Challenge organised by Cam at CurlyPops. I finally finished it and sent it off Tuesday afternoon - you can see how it turned out here!

Now I am frantically working on last minute details for the fundraising event (a Trivia Night and Auction) at my children's school which will be held this Saturday. My oldest daughter (age 7) helped decorate these "mystery" envelopes we sell at the event. There is a bit of a circus theme, hence the envelope decorations. My daughter did the circus drawings. I then made the labels and little circus tents. I think they look pretty cute:)

Now on to the bid sheets for the auction...

My Finished Hottie

I breathed a sigh of relief yesterday as I finally sent off my hottie for the Hottie Challenge group entry organised by Cam at CurlyPops. The aim of the challenge is to make a hottie cover, which will be exhibited in the gallery space at Open Drawer Art Textiles and Learning Centre from Friday July 1 to Sunday July 24, 2011.

My contribution features Australian native flowers. I embroidered them with wool thread on wool felt. As I said in an earlier post this was a project that I had a vision for right from the start, and I love how it turned out!

Our finished hotties are being donated to the Margaret Pratt Foundation, so that they may be sold to raise funds for the The Margaret Pratt Foundation Heart Lung Transplant Trust. The Foundaion is a registered charity whose aim is to encourage, develop and maintain Australia’s world class expertise in the field of organ transplantation by supporting research that addresses the problems faced by children and adults after heart and lung transplant. The aim of the research must be to improve the outcomes for heart and lung transplant recipients.

It's been fun to see the different approaches people have taken in creating their hotties. You can see other finished hotties in the Flickr Group. Enjoy! Cyndy

My Creative Space...

So, I have a bit of a thing for books. There I said it. Really, I am a self confessed bookaholic. I LOVE books. I have always been a reader and hoarder owner of books. When growing up, during the summers I used to spend all day reading in bed. It's such a simple pleasure. True, it's hard to do now that I have young children, but I do try to carve out some reading time in bed on a Sunday morning (no doubt with one or two of the children bouncing in the bed next to me:)

Reading isn't the only great thing about books. I also love the art, especially in children's books. I love browsing through the children's books in the op shop. If you have children you probably know that some books become very "loved"; pages get ripped, drawn on or even get food/juice spilled on them - I am sure you know what I mean.

I hate to see these books go to waste, especially if they have beautiful illustrations. The cards and envelopes I made are from one such book I found at the op shop. Some of the pages were loose and had water damage, but the illustrations were gorgeous! How could you not love May Gibbs' illustrations of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie no matter what condition? It took me awhile (again, even a damaged book is hard for me to cut up), but I finally decided to make some cards and lined envelopes from the illustrations. I love them! Now just to decide who to send them to!

Hope you week has been creative, for more creative spaces this week you can visit here. Cyndy

Flower Love

I love flowers - if you ever want to get me anything get me flowers:) I am not sure what it is, but flowers make me feel good; they make a space feel fresh and alive. I try to get to our local farmer's market (it's only held once a month) as you can usually get flowers for almost nothing. Australian native flowers are my preference. They last forever, are unique and are absolutely gorgeous. I managed to get to the farmer's market today and couldn't resist sharing the love - enjoy! My Creative Space

This week has been all about the upcoming fundraiser for my children's school: a Trivia Night/Silent Auction. This is the second year I have taken on the role of coordinating the event. Last Friday was the deadline for donations. While I had built in a week of wiggle room, lots of stuff coming in right at the end of last week and this week still. Now that it is all in, it needs to be organized, descriptions written up, pictures taken etc... as we create an Auction Catalogue which will be printed and distributed to families next week. Lots of work to do over the weekend to get the Catalogue ready for printing. Phew - I am tired just thinking about it!

In between all the craziness the only project I have had time for is my hottie for the Hottie Challenge. The aim of the challenge is to make a hottie cover (as in hot water bottle cover), which will be exhibited in the gallery space at Open Drawer Art Textiles and Learning Centre from Friday July 1 to Sunday July 24, 2011. Our finished hotties are being donated to the Margaret Pratt Foundation, so that they may be sold to raise funds. The picture is a sneak peak of my hottie. I am about 1/3 of the way done - only two weeks left so I need to get moving!

My Creative Space...

I like to think I am not obsessive, but I do have my weaknesses. One thing I have been consistently working on for quite some time is felt food. While there are a lot of different kinds of felt food out there it seems pretty homogeneous, not a lot of cultural flair (although I have seen some sushi which looks great). As a result I have been focusing on Aussie favourites!

Not surprisingly, most of my creations have been on the sweet side as can be seen here. My latest creation, however (just finished this morning) is my homage to the Aussie sausage sizzle, with onions and sauce of course!

One of the reasons I think I keep coming back to felt food as a project is that felt is so easy to work with and it's fun to try and figure out how to bring the food to life. How to do the sauce on the sausage puzzled me for a bit on this one. Then in talking with a friend we had the same thought at the same time of how to do it. I had to borrow my daughter's knitting Nancy (much to her chagrin) to make it, but I think it really adds to the texture of the piece.

So now I am on to the next one. I was thinking maybe fairy bread, a meat pie, or a dim sim? Any other suggestions of some Aussie favourites for me to try?
