My Creative Space

 

I'm feeling a bit discombobulated in my creative space. For the first time in 21 years, I have not worked full time and/or cared full time for at least one of my three children. That's right my youngest started school this year. That means effectively, I have from drop off to pick up each day free (6 hours).

This freedom should be fueling my creativity, but sadly this has not been the case to date. In the past it was amazing what I could do in the hour here or there that I had to myself. But despite working on a few things here and there, I am feeling decidedly unmotivated and without purpose. I know in my head what I need to do, I'm just not doing it.

I figure what I am feeling is par for the course when you experience a big change in focus and routine. Intellectually I know what I should do and could do, but I am missing the will to act on it. Hoping time is all that is needed.

So until then I will just be bumping along.

My Creative Space

Today is Thanksgiving in the US, so this past Sunday (as it's not a holiday here) we celebrated with all our friends downunder (more here). That means my focus was on getting ready for the party. Lots of baking (boy did the house smell good, sugar cookies, pumpkin pie, turkey:) and lots of cleaning.

I don't know about you, but I don't have a separate craft space, I use the kitchen table and the kitchen island for most of my making. While I clear the kitchen table so we can eat our meals, the kitchen island is a writhing pile of craft supplies and projects. For the party I had to clean it ALL up. It started out well, putting thing back in all the right places, but in the end I was dumping things into boxes/bags so I could just get it done!

Now we all know packing up is easier than unpacking (well, for me at least:) so I haven't returned everything to its home on the kitchen bench yet (I couldn't even find my basket of scissors for 2 days as I couldn't remember where I had moved them too). But as I look at my kitchen island, it's already looking like that writhing pile of craft supplies and projects! I think it might be time to just say "Hi, my name is Cyndy and I am a messy crafter:)"

It's messyalready for a good reason. A friend has talked me into sharing a stall at the Queenscliff Market this Sunday (it's also the Queenscliff Music Festival), so I have been making a few things to replace those I sold at my first market; mostly, some new wool embroidery pieces. Fortunately, I am only having a stall, not one of the market organizers, so not feeling stressful (I am also guessing having had a stall the fear of the unknown is now gone:) So if you are going to Queenscliff this weekend come by the market and say hi!

My Creative Space...Literally

I don't know about you, but my physical creative space competes with a lot of other needs in our house, like a place to eat, a place to cook, a place to use the computer, a place to put all the children's school gear when they come home...and more. With three children (and all of their stuff) space is a hot commodity in our house.

I have been trying to come up with an idea to make better use of the space we have and how I am able to organize my creative stuff. On a recent trip to IKEA I purchased some shelves (EXPEDIT) and some boxes (KASSETT). I thought I had an idea of how to use it in my space, but it just wasn't working. And so the shelves, in their box, just sat in the middle of my kitchen for 2 MONTHS (too heavy to move out to the shed).

And then last Wednesday my friend Kate came to the rescue and said what about putting the shelves here?As soon as she said it, I knew it would work. So with a little girl power over the weekend, we put the shelves and the boxes together and I began to move stuff into the shelves. I can't tell you what difference it makes being able to get to things easily and to have most of them in one central place. You will note, however, that a couple of spaces have been taken over by my youngest and middle daughter - ah, that will have to change:)
